A House of Welcome
Since its inception in 1827, the House of Mercy has embodied the values of hospitality, unity, and welcome. On December 12, 1831, Catherine McAuley, Mary Ann Doyle, and Mary Elizabeth Harley took their vows as the first Sisters of Mercy at Presentation Convent, George’s Hill. This event signified the beginning of the charism of Mercy as it exists today. By the time of Catherine McAuley’s death in 1841, there were 100 Sisters of Mercy serving in ten foundations across Ireland and England. Today, the Sisters of Mercy and our partners in ministry assist men, women, and children across the globe.
