Baggot Street Cemetery: 1841-1884

Catherine McAuley was the first to be buried in this cemetery, consecrated at the time of her death in 1841. Thirteen women died at Baggot Street prior to Catherine, and they are buried in the crypt at St. Teresa’s Church on Clarendon Street.

The 49 Sisters who died at Baggot Street after Catherine are buried in this garden. Some of the early Sisters, including Mother di Pazzi Delaney, chose the site of their own graves beside that of the Foundress.

At first, a simple cross was placed over Catherine’s grave. In 1869, Mother Magdalen Kirwan had the marble slab with an inscription placed over Catherine’s grave. In 1910, Mother Genevieve Bourke had the little memorial chapel-like structure built over the marble slab, replacing the staue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the white cross.

Resting Place

This Cemetery was consecrated on 14 November, 1841, the day before Catherine's interment, by Dr William Kinsella, Bishop of Ossary & closed by order of His Eminence, E Cardinal McCabe, Archbishop of Dublin in January 1884.
