In response to an appeal of the Knox County Medical Association, Rt. Rev. Alphonse J. Smith, Bishop of Nashville, TN arranged for the construction, management and operation of a Catholic hospital in Knoxville by the Sisters of Mercy. With great faith and courage the Sisters undertook the fundraising needed - during the time of the Great Depression. The healing ministry that was begun in Ireland by Mother Catherine McAuley had found its way by God's providence to the hills of East Tennessee.
