Coburg Convent Centenary:1903-2003

A recently published book,Through a Prism of Mercy,celebrates the centenary of the Coburg Convent of Mercy, October 1903 - October 2003.

The first Coburg convent was once theYoung Queen Hotel,built in the 1850s and famous as a stopping place for diggers during the gold rush days. The building was bought by Monsignor O'Hea, who bequeathed it and the surrounding property to the Sisters of Mercy. The first convent was superseded by the second Coburg Convent opened in 1959, a fine yellow brick structure with 40 bedrooms. This building is now incorporated intoMercy Secondary College,Coburg. The third and present Coburg convent was opened in 1988.

Through a Prism of Mercytraces the journey of these religious women and those sharing with them in a partnership of Mercy in the schools and parishes for over a century .It covers challenges and responses to changing needs of the times, during the years of the Great Depression and two World Wars; soon to be followed by the arrival ofNew Australians;then on to Vatican 11 and the Renewal of Religious life. The story covers further growth in multicultural Australia and the welcoming of migrants from Asia and Africa; next, to fewer young women entering religious life, and now to yet more sharing with others in mercy ministries.

 The book speaks of setbacks, development and celebration, reflected through the eyes of many who have shared this remarkable experience over the years. It offers hope for the future. Indeed, it is a multi-coloured prism of mercy.

 The author, Mary Stainsby rsm, is an educator and Doctor of Philosophy. She writes in a clear, informative and uplifting style that reflects her own wisdom and positive approach to life.
