Sisters of Mercy of the Americas

"Animated by the Gospel and Catherine McAuley's passion for the poor, we, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, are impelled to commit our lives and resources to act in solidarity with the economically poor of the world, especially women and children; women seeking fullness of life and equality in church and society and one another as we embrace our multi-cultural and international reality..."

About Us

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are an international community of Roman Catholic women vowed to serve people who suffer poverty, sickness, and ignorance, with a special concern for women and children. In innovative and traditional ways they address human needs through collaborative efforts in education, healthcare, housing, and pastoral and social service.

The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas was founded in 1991. The congregation is currently engaged in an ongoing reconfiguration in which groups of former regional communities are becoming single Communities with geographic names. The Northeast Community consisting of Albany, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Portland, Providence and Vermont was the first to reconfigure in July, 2005. The Mid-Atlantic Community: Brooklyn, Dallas, Merion, New Jersey and New York became a Community in July, 2006. Four remaining groups will form their Communities in 2008. These include the regional communities of Buffalo, Erie, Pittsburgh, the Philippines and Rochester who will become the New York, Pennsylvania, Pacific West (NyPPaW) Community; Auburn, Burlingame, Cedar Rapids, Chicago, Detroit and Omaha who will become the West Midwest Community; Baltimore, Cincinnati, Guam, Jamaica, North Carolina and St. Louis will become the South Central Community; the sisters in the countries of Argentina, Belize, Chile, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama and Peru who will become the Caribbean, Central America, South America (CCASA) Community. The Sisters of Mercy have been in the United States and Latin and Central America since the nineteenth century. Today the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas numbers around 4,300 sisters and about 2900 associates. These women serve in the United States, Argentina, Belize, Chile, Guam, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Ghana, Haiti, Micronesia, Puerto Rico and Romania and Africa.
